Review:
I guess this new album by Drengskapur was a surprised to the ones following the band's activity because the previous album was released in 2013, and after that only a few splits followed, the latest one in 2016, so at least 4 years of complete silence on discographic level. The band was formed in 2002 as a duo, and although it had a couple of line-up changes, it ended up at this moment still a duo, so I guess live shows are out of question. This one is their fourth full-length album, a 6 tracks effort clocking almost an hour of playing time and delivering some end '90's type sharp Black Metal with occasional acoustic passages and some semi-melodic guitar leads to give spice to the whole, a combination of abrasive and organic sounding mid-tempo to fast paced Black Metal very dense in atmosphere, with tasty, melodic leads and some nature-inspired, calm acoustic passages, Pagan-like clean male vocals, on the same recipe used two decades ago, but also with a few touches of current Black Metal here and there. Being almost an hour long gives the listener plenty of time to get into the whole atmosphere and the fact that it is varied in delivery avoids boredom at least for a guy like me used with that now traditional Black Metal type. There's also a seventh track featured, a cover of Throne of Ahaz' Where Ancient Lords Gather, that steps up a notch in favor of rawness, it gets the delivery even more caustic than what the band used to be in their own tracks. All in all Drengskapur have delivered a well done, complete Black Metal album recommended to fans of both Raw Black Metal and more Melodic Black Metal; released in Digipak CD format by the band, limited to 500 hand-numbered copies.
