Review:
10 tracks, 40 minutes of playing time mark the debut album of Italian EFYD or Enjoy Fearing Your Death, a trio based in Cremona and founded in 2017. They are labelling their music as Old-School Death Metal, but although indeed based on and OSDM skeleton, I'd say their music sounds more like end '90's - beginning of the '00's inspired when plenty of Groove Metal influences started to pour into Death Metal, and that's the case here, EFYD have a ton of Groove Metal elements in their music, starting from rhythms and closing with typical riffs. The upfront, heavy bass lines are a highlight of EFYD's music, but they are quite brutal sounding, so very cool for this type of Death Metal, but their feature I personally like most are the passages that they say define their music the most, both the mid-tempo and the fast OSDM passages when the music becomes brutal and menacing, close to sinister at times. Technical Death Metal passages are also audible from time to time and the idea is quite appealing, but unfortunately there are some abrupt rhythm changes and breaks that I find quite awkward and not on my liking at all. The production is ok, organic sounding, but I find the semi-growling vocals somehow not emphasized at all, they don't have any memorable effect on the listener, or at least on me, after the audition I mostly remember the killer bass lines and some heavy-ass riffs and rhythms, but no chorus or passage where the vocals would stand out somehow. As a conclusion I'd say have of this album I like a lot, and half of it I find awkward, so check it out, you might understand more from it then I did.
