Review:
Debut EP by this mysterious Austian band, the three tracks material clocking a bit over 20 minutes of playing time, is a horrifying and thrilling experience through some sort of psychological troubles confessed while drunk with plenty of wine; a plastic portrayal of what's happening here in terms of music and the feelings it transmits. Built on complex, aggressive, unrelenting drumming (performed by a seriously trained drummer as guest musician, that plays everything from pop to rock and has some background in Black Metal with bands like Berserk and Kaeltetod) and two layers of guitars that manage to create an atmosphere that lies between dissonance and psychological thriller/horror movie soundtrack, especially when they get repetitive and ritualistic and induce a sort of trance (reference to the band's name) to the listener. From my point of view this has nothing to do with Melodic Black Metal like some reviews are claiming, nor with old-school Black Metal, this one goes on its own fucked-up alley, a rough, unpolished and cavernous alley that is. Interesting stuff, if they work some more on adding a few memorable hooks, Sanguinary Trance might become a household name in the genre.
