Tamara Picardo (Upon Shadows)

Hi Tamara, how are you? Thanks for accepting to be featured in this new Pest Webzine section called Pest Lady.
Hi, I `m fine thank you and very happy to be featured in your new Pest Lady section.

Please tell us when did you start listening to metal music and how that happened?
Well I guess the time helped that happened, because I grow with Kiss and Van Halen playing on the radio stations all the time. Van Halen came here in 1982 and that was a big door open to the hard rock and heavy metal of this years. All kids here wanted to be like David Lee Roth, jumping across the rings of fire. Or that was what I wanted to be. Then I used to listen to a radio where played heavy metal and other kind of metal also, so I fall in love with Slayer, and the rest was just a consequence I guess.

Which were your first metal albums and how hard was it to get a hold of them?
My first metal album was Iron Maiden "Somewhere in Time "on vinyl. I had other earlier but just copies from cassette we pass ones to other. Was so difficult to buy albums because were so hard to find. Even now is not a good place for metal. Hopefully we can make orders through the web now. All is easier in that way.

Tell us about your beginnings in the music scene, how come you ended up playing in a metal band?
I started to play keyboard in 1995 in a Death Metal band called Eclampsy and I stayed with them for 7 years. We played several times and was a nice time and a really good experience.
We were all friends and in that time they lost the keyboard player and as they know I play it, so just invited me to join. But I always went to their jams before so, was like it must be me.

Do you have any specialized musical studies or did you start playing for fun?
Yes, I learn to play the piano by the old method with 4 years of notation and metric.
And I started to play in a band because I need it, and feel the deep need to be active part of the metal music. I need to create and of course I get lot of fun doing it.

Upon Shadows is your own band now, please tell us what you think we should know about it.
Well, Upon Shadows is place where I put all from me.
My true of everything, I mean with that, my passion for music, the things I love, my pain and my joy.
I guess that the most important thing in Upon Shadows project is that is music made without having the plan to catch the attention to others and that make it capricious but also full of real passion.

What goals do you have with Upon Shadows? Do you play live as well or it is a studio project exclusively?
Yes Upon Shadows is a studio project. I really don’t have intentions to play live with this project. Will be very difficult because we are only two women,
Natalia on bass and me in keyboard, guitar, voices and programming, and I guess that adding musicians just for live performance will kill the spirit of the music we are making.
I acknowledge that I am very idealistic in some ways and maybe close, but this same is the essence of our music.

Now you have a new project, Asbel. What is it all about?
Yes Asbel is a Colombian one man band which had the great idea of making an album featuring women vocalist of all around the world. We recorded an album this year called "The Dark…The Withered…” and I participate doing the instrumental keyboard that open the album called "Sweet Darkness” and in other song called "Solar Breeze” in which I made the whole vocals, keys and lyric.
The other girls involve in that album are Moonlike from Blackest Orchid ( Canada), Ilkim Oulanem ( Turkey ) and Hypothermia from Coldnight (Colombia).
The album was released by Salute Records (Sweden) .
And as it seems that the album is been well sold the idea of making a second part became true, and we are working on it, since some month ago. Is being a great experience for me. I really love Asbel music. I guess he found his own style and sound and that is just great.

You're a pretty active person in the underground, what drives you into supporting this idea? What's the difference between underground and mainstream in your opinion?
I want to support the efforts of artists dedicated to create, because that is the true essence of art. The underground is full of great composers, painters, writers and more artist, that are out of the commercial system and that let us in the ignorance of their creations. I want to see, hear and read what they wanted to show us.
I guess the main difference is the purpose. The underground offer the art in its pure expression without the contamination of marketing and its coldness.

Which are your fave bands at the moment?
My favorite bands are Samael, Abigor, Sabaoth and Corporation of Corpse Stealers.

Do you think being a girl in the extreme metal field is an advantage or a disadvantage?
I have to say that I never felt discriminated in that way here in my country.
So I really don’t think that can be an advantage or disadvantage. All depends on the personality we have. Maybe in other counties things are different.

What do you do besides playing music? How's a regular day for you?
I work in an office, I`m secretary or something like that.
Then I have to take care of my house like everybody and then the rest is all for music.
I also work in the musical production of a local TV show called Voces Anonimas (anonymous voices),
Which is about urban legends and myths. I make the soundtracks for each story, and some sounds effects. Is a very interesting work in which I`m learning and enjoying a lot.

Please tell us your opinion on the following:
- politics
I have a very bad opinion about it. I guess they are all the same; they create the ideologies and make those grow into people just to make us fight ones against each other, while they all wallow in the same bed and counting the money that they steal from all of us.
- global warming
I think it is a consequence of excessively consumerist we have.
- beer
I don’t drink any kind of alcohol. But I don’t have anything against it.
- Gaahl being gay
Well I guess that maybe was a weird decision from his part to make this public. I guess that sexuality is something private and don’t affect the music. I really don’t mind.
- icecream
I like it.
- football
The opium of my country.
- diets
Sometimes a need.
- religions
Religions are the impediment to progress and understanding among people. Are the oldest weapon of manipulation of history, and even work. I respect the beliefs, but I think should be just that.
- metalcore
I don’t like it.
- Vinyl
Vinyls are beautiful pieces of art.

Thanks for your time, Tamara, wish you good luck with your projects and a Happy Birthday for next month. :)
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to show my music and for your good wishes.
The work you do in Pest Webzine is really good and a great support to all the underground.
And yes is true I will be older the next 18 of October, oh nooo hahahaha
