Review:
Debut album from this French quintet, Ambre Gris is a 5 tracks effort clocking 43 minutes of playing time. The tracks were composed between 2013 and 2018, although the CD booklet says they were composed between 2013 and 2019 and recorded between January and June 2019, but I'm writing this in March, so this album is still under recording process, haha. Joking aside (as these mistakes happen) Edremerion offer us a depressive, melodic yet aggressive and fast paced Black Metal lead by desperate screams, or better said something between screams and growls yet comprehensive for French speaking audience. The guitar work is quite expressive and the actual leading force behind all the music, taking the compositions towards avantgarde territories, quite far from liniar, predictable patterns, pushing boundaries and blending dissonant structures into catchy melodies, very inpressive I'd say. As said before, mostly because of the desperate vocals, the atmosphere is depressing, oppressive and transmits a meditative, nostalgic impression (at times it ventures into occult / mysterious passages, too) to the listener, one of those albums you better listen to at home in the dark, with a glass of wine, rather than headbanging live, or at least that's what it "sends" to me. Try it out, it's something different for sure.
