Review:
New mysterious band from Poland, Codex Nero debuts here with this 8 tracks album that's almost 50 minutes in duration. Right from the band name, album cover art (which is excellent, by the way) and album title you know you're going to deal with occult, misanthropic matters here, and that's exactly what everything on this album reeks of: misanthropy and death! Overall this is a bleak, oppressive, intoxicating type of Black Metal, but there are plenty of those evil Blackened Death Metal influences that made Poland probably the strongest territory in this genre. There's a dense and terrifying atmosphere surrounding the whole material, and the fact vocals are mixed so distant within the whole makes it all even more sinister. The bass lines are fat and heavy, typical for those Death Metal influences, the drumming is intense and technical, the guitar work is excellent, from the clever tremolo riffs to the mystical leads, they give the album its identity. Although this is not at all an easy listening, The Great Harvest of Death proves plenty of quality, there's much to discover if just given the time, and from my point of view if you're in a hurry and just want to get a taste of what this band intends to do, you should give a try to the 2nd track Terra Nullius, balancing between fast and dirty Black Death and mid-tempo, occult Black Metal, plus plenty of those heavy atmospheres. Again, if you don't give it a chance to unfold in full, this might get past you very easily, but if you pay close attention you'll discover plenty of interesting harmonies inhere.
