Review:
Wow, a new album after 11 years, that's some serious wait for the Empheris fans, although they were treated with plenty of EPs and splits in the meantime, so after all The Return of Derelict Gods might be the perfect name for this album. 10 tracks in 40 minutes of Blackened Thrash Metal with some Heavy Metal and even Pagan Metal touches here and there, that's what Empheris treat us with here. Old-school to the bone, but varied and clever enough to avoid boredom, Empheris' compositions take us though plenty of rhythms, with changes happening when you're not expecting, but also with plenty of material for a frantic headbanging session. Actually I think this material is perfect for live situations, a serious touring backup for this album would skyrocket this band's name. Not sure why but they reminded me of the Swedish Nifelheim, maybe because of their look, but also because of their enthusiasm and energy; think of old German Thrash Metal mixed with some second wave Black Metal, mid-tempo to fast paced, with a wicked atmosphere mostly emphasized by the hoarse, vicious vocals but also by some brief moments of slow to mid-tempo rhythms that alternate with the mostly frantic attitude of the band. A sick album that sounds so old-school but at the same time so current. Well worth your time, check it out!
