Band: ASMODAI
Country: Australia
Title: Realm of Torment
Label: Selfreleased
Year: 2010
Style: Black Thrash Death

Review:
Three pieces band coming from Australia, Asmodai bring to the table their debut demo, a 3 tracks effort lasting for 18 minutes. The Scandinavian Black/Death Metal influences are obvious, and it seems they admit and fully accept their influences, but still they are doing a hell of a good job here, based on an exquisite twing guitars work. Really, the guitars are the best thing over here: fast as hell, twisted as much as necessary, catchy, melodic, epic... I would listen to such guitarists all day long. Then the bass work is not bad at all, too, it's very present and powerful so you won't miss it. Drums are programmed as the band has no drummer for the moment, but the guy who programmed them did his job very well, usually drum-machine sounds too synthetic and at some point you'll get bored with it, but here it's not the case at all. The sound is very good as well, crystal-clear, and the album presentation is great, too, if you're into CDr with slim DVD case + cover (I for one really love this format!). The only problem would be the vocal part: the guy sounds like he's trying too much to be a Immortal + Children Of Bodom result, it doesn't have that natural feeling so I don't like it, but all in all I would definitely buy this demo for the guitar work. Give this band a listen, you might like it, too.

Band: BEHEADED ZOMBIE
Country: Russia
Title: Hapiness for All
Label: Bad Moon Man Music / Technical Sound Rec.
Year: 2009
Style: Technical Death Metal

Review:
Active since 2002, Beheaded Zombie released three prior albums before "Hapiness for All", so we're dealing with a mature, experimented band here, but they seem to be concentrated on the Russian market/public only all their lyrics being Russian written. This album is my first encounter with Beheaded Zombie, an encounter which will leave me with lots of questions. Yes, the band plays Technical Death Metal, but it's not the new style, the fast and furious one, this is the old-school type, extremely twisted and complicated, slow to mid-tempo with very few fast rhythmed insertions. When talking of old-school type think of a combination of Mekong Delta and Pestilence, this has nothing to do with the Death kind of style. The growled but comprehensive vocals are based on a generous display of instrumental technical skills, it's like each instrument has its own path and personality, but they manage to somehow meet each other and form a whole. As a visual representation of what we get here think of a contorsionist doing his job for about half an hour, that's all.
I don't understand a thing from the booklet, and honestly I don't like its artwork, it's too alternative for my tastes, but maybe that's their point, to be different. Anyway, a solid release for metalheads in search for a different piece in their Technical Death Metal collection.

Review:
Beware as Poland comes with yet another killer Death Metal band! Being a young Polish band and playing Technical Groove-infused Death Metal will surely bring Beheading Machine a lot of comparisons with their country-mates from Decapitated, and indeed this EP resembles quite much with the first 2 Decapitated releases. Still Beheading Machine has it's own way, especially on guitars (more groovier than aggressive) and drums (less focused on fast double-bass pedal, more mid-tempo). As a first EP this is an extremely good stab of precise Technical yet Groovy and Brutal Death Metal, catchy, complex and headbanging-friendly, recommended to all of you. You'll find it for free download from the band's website, so try it.

Review:
Honestly I don't like this kind of Multimedia releases, but I can surely understand this is a better way of promoting your band when sending out CDs, the listener has all band info at hand without having to search for anything on the net.
Blackout (uninspired name...) comes from UK, was founded in 2003 and this is their second EP (second release as well), as I said above, a multimedia EP containing lots of info, pics, video, live recordings, pretty musch everything you need to get to know this band pretty well. Regarding music, Blackout is a Thrash Metal act strongly influenced by the Heavy Metal scene on the guitars part, a great part for sure, the guitars shred heavy like hell. They have managed to build some quite catchy and entertaining tracks here, and even played live they are sounding solid and fit for headbanging. The guitar work is the one that makes this band a good promise for the UK underground metal.
I've just searched for their website on the net and surprise, the band recently changed their name to [Tonne]... Now see why I don't like multimedia CDs?
A CD recommended to all of you who enjoy solid, fast and catchy guitar work supported by intense complex rhythm section.

Review:
Debut release for this Italian band, "Bribed" contains 5 tracks (15 tracks) of fast and brutal Death Metal played by quite skilled musicians. The tracks, although complex and variated are prooving a good display of how to curdle all instruments into a stong whole, but still keeping their own way to a point you start thinking there was no link between the instrumentists when recording: good brutal Death Metal growls with occasional screams and gurgling Grind vocals, two guitars that never stand still like walking your pitbulls on a leash, and an insane drummer. I can see this band on top of the Italian Death Metal scene that's so great nowadays. Recommended!

To begin this review, I would say that I do not know how to position myself between laughter and contempt! To be honest, I do not know! I think the dynamics present a demo like "Frost Pagan Winter”, of this poor quality, very shameful!, there is a minimum! We can apreciate the "true black metal" and have some respect for it!
I read the titles of songs that are catchy enough, and I'm speechless listening! Not funny, unfortunately, but rather on a hillside startled!
Sound is one thing, each with its means of production, and the problem is not there! Intensity of a title, a piece is the intension and the intensity that we place in it!
I can only note that nothing is in its place, the instruments are all, like voice, decals! Impossible to follow the thread so the game is not up! Not to mention all the votes! I like very amateurish vocals, kind of depressive black metal, and like Burzum (old albums), but not here! No and no! Through the demo I find that a poor caricature that shames the black metal!
In conclusion I would say that I totally hated this! I do not recommend that for a few minutes to laugh!!!
I hope that fouder of DARK METHODISM will rework his opus!

"Behind the Eye "and its two titles, we are offered a good death / thrash, furious, energetic and pest! In fact, from the first notes of the title track, the color is announced!! No concessions!!! The melodies are very well built, like the play of musicians that is perfect! We can feel in each of the two titles, with a particular desire an atmosphere very precise!
With Darosham we can have the pleasure to find in their music influences, and not so good! A touch of classic thrash but also the reference to classic death metal bands of their country!!!
The band added another song on their myspace ("Burden of Sin” old line up).

Band: FIRE FROM INSIDE

Title: Healthy Therapy...
Label: selfreleased
Year: 2008

Review:
I think I am reviewing at least 1 Italian band for each of my reviews-sessions, and that's either for this country's bands knowing how to promote themselves and to search promotion, or for the overwhelming quantity of bands that comes from The Boot. The good part is that this strong rivalry brings the Italian bands to be better and better every year, so who said quantity excludes quality?
Fire From Inside are bringing to the table a very groovy and catchy style of Stoner Metal that, in my opinion could have been more curdled, but as this is their first effort it's very understandable that they are experimenting and searching for their own way. For now they have chosen combine old-school hard rock with newer kind of (Thrash) metal, and they did it quite well, the album is interesting, never boring and keeps you tight to your speakers to find out what's next, how the next track sounds. That's because each track is different, they take their inspiration from very different genres like Stoner (that's the main, the base for FFI's music), hardcore, hard rock, thrash and even punk. During the 12 tracks (1 hour of playing) FFI prove to be good musicians with interesting ideas, you'll like it if you're an openminded metalhead, but I'm curious to see if they'll find their own way on their next release.

That Finns can be creepy and strange and sick is known in the whole world and this tape is a certain proof for it! People who know this bands will get the expected sick and dark music, 33 minimalistic but intensive minutes. There are eight songs, 5 from Gourva, 3 from Goat Tunnel. They fit perfectly together and you don't really hear a difference, so really a split in that case, that they worked out together a CD and not just taking some songs together.

Well, after checking these guys' webpage I keep wondering why aren't they signed yet. Their attitude and professionalism literally craves for the metal mainstream so I guess if they keep on working this way it's impossible not to get ahold of a good deal with some major label.
Here I have their 2009 EP composed of 5 tracks (23 minutes) of Heavy Thrash Metal, a very good blend of traditional rhythms and aggression with some modern ingredients a la Arch Enemy (especially on vocals), and to take them piece by piece, here we go: scream-like comprehensive and powerful vocals (the right amount of screaming, not the one that's getting on your nerves), catchy traditional aggressive guitar riffs with some melodic guitar leads in addition, mid-tempo, enjoyable guitar solos, strong bass lines and a drummer that knows how to make the band sound like a whole. Hemoptysis are a very good team playing very good compositions.
Bottomline if you add the good quality music to their image, professionalism and dedication, you get a band that's a strong candidate to success.

One-man-band from UK founded in 2007 that released a demo and a split (with Malta's Sahhar) in 2008 prior to releasing this debut full-length, a debut album composed of 7 tracks and lasting for about 50 minutes. Iconic Destruction plays mid-tempo Black Metal with quite good atmospheres, cold and dark, as all such releases should have. Zac, the man behind this project, does everything on this album, except for some guitar solos on 2 tracks. So let's see what we have here: mid-tempo, punding drums (seem to be recorded, not programmed), extremely good, powerful bass lines, insane Black Metal screams and guitar lines that give the atmospheric touch to the whole. the mixing and mastering could have been better, and such a release would have deserved it, and also the vocal part could have been a bit more varied as there are signs Zac wants to try adding more tones (growls), but being his first album I think he'll do things differently on the next release. Bringing the bass in front of guitars seems to be a great idea if you handle your 4-strings correctly. I will be listening this album some more times, for sure, and I recommend it to you too.

Title: Victims of Subhumanity
Label: Selfreleased
Year: 2008
Style: Black Metal

Review:
The 3rd EP of this Greek Black Metal horde (actually it was a full-band until some years ago when it became a two-men-band), "Victims of Subhumanity" is a 6 tracks effort lasting for almost 40 minutes. This could have easily been named as full-length, but from the 6 tracks 2 of them are live-recorded. Anyway, a lenghty EP that sevres us a good dose of aggressive Black Metal, mostly Raw and Old-School, but the style of playing guitars with two or even three overlapped guitar lines (track 3) gives it a sinister melodic atmosphere. Adding the very good old-school type of vocals Charon has (hoarse but comprehensive and oh so evil sounding), plus the intros, we get a putefying release for the underground BM followers out there. If Charon, the main person behind Imperium Infernalis, will improve the sound quality or take a bit more time in a proper studio, we'll get yet another proud act coming from this so prolific Greek Black Metal scene. I'm sure that by using a proper studio to record I.I. won't loose it's raw feeling and atmosphere.
This is not an innovative band, but it's not about originality here, what we're offered is a honest and serious old-school '80's like Black Metal so if you're expecting anything else you'll be disapointed for sure.

Review:
Formed in 2006, Infection recently released their debut album, "Necrokindergarden", a 14 tracks (55 minutes) effort to proove the metal world they are a mature and curdeled band. And they are... Heavily influenced by the '90's American Death Metal scene and most notable by Cannibal Corpse, Malevolent Creation or Monstrosity. Their music appears to be well thougth (especially the quitar work), skillfully executed and catchy enough to gather a serious fanbase especially in Spanish speaking countries as they play in Spanish exclusively. Though I don't understand why their tracks titles are in English if their lyrics are in Spanish...
The album has a good sound, so no complaints about that, the vocals are perfect for this type of Death, but still I would like more variations like the background vox present here from time to time. The overall music rhythm ranges from mid-tempo to fast paced.
As a conclusion, "Necrokindergarden" is an enjoyable, brutal and complex piece of '90's American influenced Death Metal above the average.

Review:
Inferius Torment was formed in 2003 and released 1 demo and 1 EP before getting to record and release their debut album, the album in case here. "Your God Liar" is a half an hour piece of Satanic Black Metal consisting of 10 tracks. A very good effort I would say, very hateful, dark and expressive; fast and uncompromising Black Metal made of: hoarse, aggressive vocals, ultra fast drums (well, except on track 9), regular Black Metal guitar riffage and sinister intermezzos. Nothing extravagant or original in what concerns compositions, but a true piece of Raw, aggressive, dark and not boring, as such a band should sound. My only complaint would be the drums sound that is so raw that after a while gets to be anoying. Recommended to the ones of you into raw sounding old-school Black Metal with satanic / anti-christian lyrics.

Instant Supression could be defined as Modern Melodic Death Metal as a general label, but their music is rich of elements from a lot of styles that could bring in the progressive addition to their music. Based on metallic grounds established by powerful, catchy guitar riffs, a very good, complex rhythm section (drums & bass lines), all types of vocals from growls to clean and from screams to electro, Instant Supression adds a lot of synths, effects, stops and breaks, melodic guitar solos, all of them skillfully crafted, rehearsed to perfection and professionaly polished. Review:
This review belongs to the second output and full length album of Korpblod, a young couple of swedish artists. And as though the pagan metal scene is not the brightest these days, there are still spotlights on the dark sky. And this band is one of them.
With this CD you will get over one hour cold and dark pagan, black metal, which just artists from the north can create. No senseless lyrics, it is all in swedish and they are singing about their roots to mother nature and their country. A big plus for the authenticity.
The music itself is raw but still in good quality, perfect fitting to the whole thing called Korpblod, in my opinion. Fast black metal guitars, good not to overtechnical drums underlining the simplicity of the music and idea behind. The vocals are screamed of Ulf, who also plays the drums and writes the lyrics. Disa, the other part of this project, plays the guitars and instruments like the flute or other old ones. The use of those last two is made in a good simple way completing the music and creating a great atmosphere. This is a great work and all lovers of authentic pagan, black metal should keep them in mind and give a listen.

Review:
Formed back in 1999 in Tenerife, Spain, as a three-men project, Kurwen was soon after that put on hold. A few years later one of the guys, Nando, decided to refresh the project and re-started working as a one-man-project. we're dealing here with his first demo, a 5 tracks effort lasting for about 22 minutes, that by looking at its cover artwork might induce you a false impression you're going to listen to a Pagan Metal material. false because what we get here is a melodic but still quite aggressive mix of Black and Death Metal: fast tempo most of the time, technical guitar leads, metalic, catchy guitar riffs (Nando knows how to handle this instrument pretty well), important keyboard lines going from '70's like psychedelic touces to Melodic Black Metal parts and even some majestic, Epic Power Metal kind of keys, hoase vocals, programmed drums (pretty well done, they won't disturb you). The mixing and mastering could have been done a bit better, although this is good enough for a demo. All in all this gave me the impression I'm listening to a band from the late '90's, begining of 2000 when there was all that fuzz about mixing all kind of aggressive rhythms with as much as possible melody. The demo is downloadable for free from Kurwen's website, so you can give it a try.

This is the first 2010 release I'm reviewing. Lapis Niger comes from Italy, was founded back in 2003 and this is their second full-length, the first being "New Order of Chaos" self-released in 2005. Italian label Slava Satan Records signed them and the result is this 9 tracks (35 minutes) piece of mid-tempo to fast Black Metal. Although not as varied as I like my Black Metal, this is a good piece of straigth-in-your-face aggressive and evil metal well executed and curdled enough to gather some good reactions from underground BM followers. There was a trend 10 years ago in this scene, the major part of the BM bands proudly stated in their genre description: uncompromising, no melody, no female vocals. Although a lot of them were pure shit, in this case I would say the statement fits perfectly, and this is not a shitty band also. Review:
I think I have something with Sweden Today, this is the third band from this country I'm reviewing. Maleficio was founded back in 1990, so we're dealing with a band that has a 2 decades career under belt, 20 years of underground as they have only released demos (18 demos!!!) until 2008 when their have launched their debut album on Colombian Hateworks Records. Last year the band signed with Holland's Apollon Records and are looking forward to get established as an important player in the European metal scene.
"Go to Hell" is a 10 tracks (35 minutes effort) of melodic, yet aggressive Death Metal (with some Black Metal influences here and there): low tuned, crunchy guitar riffs with occasional melodic solos, growling yet comprehensive vocals, very good and  rhythm section and an overall mid to fast tempo. As highlights I would mention the awesome guitar solos on "Harbringer of Death" and "Burn" and the clean vocals on "In the Name of the Holy", but except that the album, although well crafted, still lacks of something extra, something that would make the band original.
All in all we're dealing with a solid album, well produced, powerful enough to get the name out there but not original enough to highlight the band in our overpopulated nowadays scene. Anyways hats off for this tenacious band, they deserve respect.

Band: MOLOKEN
Country: Sweden
Title: Our Astral Circle
Label: Discouraged Records
Year: 2009
Style: Progressive Doom Death

Review:
Moloken's "Our Astral Circle" has been one of the hardest albums for me to review in the last year. Trying to sum their sound in a few words is difficult because they don't seem to fit into any particular genre of metal. Some people may see this as a bonus but for me it left me somewhat confused. They are described as a mixture of doom and death metal in the early 90s style, British epic progressive rock, and ambient hardcore but i don't hear much hardcore at all in this. They have many doom elements in their sound but its not like traditional doom metal like Candlemass or the more stoner doom sound of Electric Wizard. Moloken's sound is more sludge driven but with a progressive rock edge. Opening track "Molten Pantheon" has a thick sounding riff and the vocal roar of Nicklas Bäckström knocks you back in your chair at first, he has a tortured vocal sound. The music is very bass heavy but with some strong melodic lead breaks inserted to add some real contrasting sounds. At first i was thinking Cult of Luna meets Swallow the Sun but after repeated spins i keep hearing something different again.. There is also some hypnotic rhythms with melodic drumming that you don't hear too often within a metal band. By the time you get to the third track called "Die Fear Will" you get a almost "Mastodon" type feeling about the band. The mixture of pure power chords and sonic ambiance is well done but just to confuse you even more, there is a almost "Neurosis" influence that shines through in songs like "Followers". The main feature of the band's songwriting is the use of dynamics, loud and quiet sections mingle together and melancholic leads blend with thundering sludge sections. The quieter sections seem to work best as in the moody intro to "Untitled I", another highlight is "My Enemy" which is a savage slab of metal but for doom fans "11"12" stands out as being the closet thing to pure doom.
Just to confuse you even more about this band, i must say there is a kind of looseness to the recordings on here even though the band is incredibly tight. This is a achivement on their part, to be able to record some real tight musical interplay but to also keep a live in the studio vibe. Elsewhere on the album you will more good tracks, there is no real filler material but the tracks i already mentioned do stand out as being the high points on the album. Musically Moloken wont re-define the doom/sludge genre but the crossover sound they have may point to a emerging trend with the doom metal style. Its not doom enough to be a pure doom album and not deathly enough to be death metal but this is still one hell of a heavy release. The production is excellent and the packaging is equally as impressive but the music contained within may take a few spins to get used to. As good as this album is, i personally think their best work is still to come. To me this is the sound of a band trying to figure out which road to take musically speaking and i mean no offense to anyone with that statement. This is a big step up from their debut "We all face the dark alone" and the band has the musical chops to create something really special next time around. Till then, my friend!

Review:
We're dealing here with a band formed in 2008 and this is their debut demo, a 3 tracks (12 minutes) release of putrid Cyber Grind, a bit too synthetic for my tastes. The band relays more on constructing groovy structures than on being brutal or fast, so the 3 tracks are slow to mid-tempo gurgling copositions with pretty ok sound for such a band, but unfortunately sometimes their interpretation gives the impression of a sloppy act with few rehearsals or with a demo recorded on a hurry. Synchronization is the key and they sometime go out of track, especially on the second track where the guitar doesn't seem to follow the rhythm imposed by vocals and drum-machine. This slow to mid-tempo rhythm they seem to have addopted it's interesting in this genre and with more rehearsals and a proper demo we could hear some good things from this band, but again this demo doesn't convince me at all.

Morgue Supplier is back with a new release to crush and destroy everything in their path. First time I've listened to this 8 tracks (21 minutes) EP I had the same feeling like when listening to Hate Eternal's first release, meaning terrified by the constant, unrelenting attack of twisted and extremely brutal sounds coming from all over: insane vocal assault, ultra-fast drumming, sadistic bass lines and powerful, catchy guitar riffs, all these creating a tornado atmosphere making you feel like you're in a middle and all sorts of objects are rotating around you with devastating intensity and force; you never know when you'll get hit by something. "Death Grind properly done" is mentioned on their website as a description of what we get on this EP, and that's exectly what we get, North American style Brutal Death Grind done with the twisted intensity of the Grind Australian scene.
After 2 demos, 2 EPs and 1 full-length Morgue Supplier are slowly but certainly building a name to be recognized. I strongly recommend this EP to every Death grind fanatic out there.

Natu Sabverata, a pretty strange name for an extreme metal band... I have very few info about this band, so I'll just stick to reviewing what's happening on this album. Basically we are treated with 15 tracks (60 minutes) of mid-tempo Thrash Death heavily injected with Hardcore and Grindcore grooves, but this doesn't mean we're dealing with a Deathcore band. The rhythms are very catchy, but because tehre is not so much variation and the album is a long one you might get bored with it after a while if you're not into Groove influenced Extreme Metal. "Existing ..." is made of: double vocals (growls and screams on the background), Hardcore/Grindcore drumming and Old-School Thrash Death guitar riffs and leads. There are and have been lots of bands playing under this moniker, Necropsy, along the time, but here we're dealing with the German outfit established in 2001, a band that sees it's debut only 9 years after their foundation, and what an album... Released by a pretty big label, NoiseHead Records, Necropsy have now everything in their favour. "Deathprayer" is a 10 tracks release lasting for almost 45 minutes of old-school Death Metal influenced by such acts as Suffocation or Bolt Thrower. Normally I do not compare bands, but Necropsy gives me that old-school feeling with their mid-tempo massive sounding Death Metal: grunting vocals, crunchy, fat guitar riffs with occasional sharp solos, and a rhythm section that makes it sound like a wall coming at you. The guitars are so fat and catchy that I can surely mention them as being the highlight of this band, you cannot get bored listening to such killer sounds. Good for headbanging, good for listening at home, catchy, groovy and honest, so from my point of view this is a great debut for Necropsy. Recommended!

Band: NEMESIS COMPLEX
Country: USA
Title: Demo
Label: Selfreleased
Year: 2009
Style: Grindcore

Review:
This is beyond doubt one of the worst demos I got lately, and that due to only one thing, the sound. The sound is horrible, rehearsal-like, but for some of you this could be a plus for Nemesis Complex. Why? The New Jersey trio plays old-school Grindcore, that type of Grindcore bands like Agathocles, Rot or Brutal Truth used to do in their early days, and such a sound was pretty much a standard back then. The tracks are pretty good, though, extremely aggressive, as they should be, complex enough and catchy for old-fashioned grincorers out there, this if you don't care about sound, of course. With a good recording this band would rip you apart! The demo is available for free download, so you can give it a try if you want your brains all smashed and prepared for a violent headache.

Band: NOX AUREA
Country: Sweden
Title: Via Gnosis
Label: Solitude Prod.
Year: 2009
Style: Doom Death

Review:
Although Solitude Prod. presents the band as being a young one, Nox Aurea are around since 2005, so I won't consider the band young. This is their debut album, a major effort extended for more than 70 minutes of depressive, dark and melancholic sounds brilliantly released by this ultra-professional Russian label (one of the best I've seen lately). Nox Aurea are compared mostly with Draconian, but there are multiple differences between the two bands: Draconian relay mostly on female vocals while Nox Aurea are based more on the male vox having female vox as support only, Nox Aurea are darker, more death metal influenced, have a heavier sound (traditional doom metal type) while Draconian are more gothic influenced, and Nox Aurea are much more depressive and melancholic than Draconian, so I wouldn't agree completely with these comparisons, maybe only a bit with the older Draconian work.
I do enjoy a lot the vocal work, 4 of the 5 musicians have their vocal touch inhere and although most of the time it's regular Doom Death hoarse types of vocals, the combination with Alice's warm tone and with some male clean parts it's something that gets to you quickly if you're into this music. The drums work is also a very good one revealing a drummer full of ideas, and regarding the guitars I have only one observation, I would have liked some melodic guitar solos here and there. Though I would recommend this only to Doom/Death connaisseurs as the length will bore the hell out of you if you're not used to such sounds.
The production is splendid, no worries about that, you'll get a very professional material like there all once.
