I remember this band made an impression on me with their 2014 debut album, but their 2017 follow up full-length fell off my radar somehow, and here we are in 2021 with a new material, a 7 tracks EP the totally feels like another full-length album although clocking only a bit over half an hour in playing time; actually I don't know why they decided to call it an EP as it has all attributes to be a new album. Anyway, the new material is out on the same BadMoodMan in beautiful 3 panels digipak CD version with an excellent cover art that combined with the album title and the cleverly mixed song titles will give you a clear idea on what's inside. From my point of view musically speaking Woe Unto Me are venturing in a territory that if explored already, it want explored enough yet and it has full potential in evolving into a clear subgenre, and I mean here the mix between Melodic Doom Death and Progressive Metal, the heavy kind a la Gojira, Townsend or Messhuggah, and offered to the listener in a heavy, touching melancholic mantle, hence the hope-wrecking in the title. The instrumental execution, the versatile vocals (some of the best I've heard in a long time), composition, diversity, production, all are absolutely top-notch here and I feel if this would have been marketed as a full-length album it could have been one of the best of this year, this EP thing will draw them back a bit and not because of lack of quality, hell no, but because that's how things work and the band should have known it after 13 years of existence. That's my only negative comment on this material, the rest is absolutely brilliant, I love it to bits!
