Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.
DE Profundis was formed in 2005 by Craig (Vocals) and Roman (Ex.Guitars). The band started off with the intention of playing some hybrid form of doom with black metal. Once the first line up got going especially with Shoi on second guitars the technical element and more death metal influence started coming out. De Profundis has released 3 full lengths and one EP, completed 7 tours one of which in India. The band has toured Europe with the likes of Rotting Christ, Marduk and Immolation, and even supported Iron Maiden in India ! Last year Roman was asked to leave the band for various reasons. The current line up is :
Craig Land: Vocals
Shoi Sen: Guitars
Paul Nazarkardeh: Guitars
Arran McSporran: Bass
Nick Tingle: Drums
How would you describe your style? Which bands influenced your music?
De Profundis plays an eclectic style of Death Metal with some progressive, technical and Black metal elements, our sound has evolved a lot but we still sound like De Profundis which is the best compliment that we get. In a scene where bands seem to be copying each other, De Profundis does its own thing we don't follow trends nor a particular scene. In terms of influence I think one can hear a lot well assimilated influences ranging from Maiden to Death and Norwegian Black Metal, but also bands like Pink Floyd.
Why should a metalhead buy your demos/albums?
If you like your death metal melodic and technical at the same time then you should make us a priority on your check list. If you are into B string wankery, pop vocals on the chorus, and pseudo technical music because of poly-rhythms then don't bother checking us out.
What have you released so far and how were your releases received by the public/media?
We have released 3 full album, Beyond Redemption (2007) A Bleak Reflections (2009) and The Emptiness Within (2012) and our new EP 'Frequencies' (2014). Our first album was a self release but still got us in the top 10 unsigned bands in Terrorizer and a slot at Bloodstock. A Bleak Reflection and The Emptiness were generally very well received but we don't play easily digestible music like what you most of the time these days, so I would say those albums have become growers. Once someone gets the De Profundis' style they are hooked which is the great thing we just more people to get it!
Do you play live as well? How's your live activity so far?
We didn't play live until we had our first album, from that first show we never looked back, we are a LIVE band. We play every show like it was our last, give our 100%. Since 2007 we have played over 100 shows and 7 tours ( Europe . Indian and UK ). We are off again from this Saturday to promote the new EP across the UK . This will culminate with a performance at Bloodstock this August. Again if you want a proper metal show where the musicians are giving it their all then we are for you, if you are more into musicians being all kult and shoegazing then stay at home!
What should labels/zines/promoters know about your band? Why should they be interested in it?
De Profundis plays melodic and technical music with lots of hooks which means people will come back to us all the time and we won't be some sound effects that they listen in the background and forget about. That means from a label's point of view DE PROFUNDIS will develop an effective catalogue of music which is where a band get their longevity from. Like I said before De Profundis is a live band, we will play and tour as much as possible to promote our music, and always deliver a top show regardless of how many people are at the show or how receptive the crowd is. We don't have a silly gimmick our gimmick is that we are excellent musicians and songwriters.
What plans do you have for the near future as a band?
The EP is the first part of this 18 months project. The EP is only a teaser for the album which is recorded and ready to go. We just need a label to release it and promote it. We'll do the rest, i.e. go on the road a promote it like hell.
Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?
All our music is available on deprofundis.bandcamp.com and from our website www.deprofundistheband.com where you can listen to and buy our music and merch.
