Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.
Spit out of the deep sea floods around R’lyeh in 2004, surrounded by sharpened riffs, drumbeats out of endless flood dungeons and in the flow of thundering adjurations, five cultists went out to sound the call of CTULU beyond the wet vaults.
Blind chaos, impulsive waves and rolling masses of water will be flushed around the columns of the earth to drag everything into the depth! The first demonstrative sign of life ’’Zins der Zeit’’ (self-released) sounded out of dephts-drunken underwater cities in 2005, and was mercilessly followed by ’’Freie Geister’’ (Northfire Records/ Twilight Distribution) in 2008. In April 2011, Ctulu shall lay "Sarkomand" in ashes!
Discography:
2005: Zins der Zeit (demo, self-released)
2006: Freie Geister (demo, self-released)
2008: Freie Geister (full-length, Northfire Records/Twilight Distribution)
2011: Sarkomand (full-length, to be released on April 29th, 2011 via Godeater Records)
How would you describe your style? Which bands influenced your music?
Ctulu's style is seastorming extreme metal exclusively! Influences are outfits like old Dissection, Naglfar and other melodic extreme metal bands but still Ctulu has its very own sound worlds that are best described by imagining a thunderous sea storm!
Why should a metalhead buy your demos/albums?
Not only with its newest output, Ctulu will definitely be a band that will be talked about. Beyond the pagan metal hype and conformist elite black metal, Ctulu offers raging and diversified melodic extreme metal that both inspires black metal, death metal and thrash metal devotees!
We are not making music to distinguish ourselves or to shape any "elite", the bottom line is that we're also just creating rock'n'roll and we don't give a fuck about what elitarian people think what "black metal" should or shouldn't be!
We're not here to satisfy any "black metal police" which try to limit the genre to their own conservative minds.
We're giving everything unto the art and our followers, a hundred per cent of every track we play, not limited to anybody's but our own ideas!
An infamous German band once stated "German hateful and misanthropic Black Metal, made from White man for White man." What the fuck? What in the Old One's name is that band suffering from? Ctulu thinks if you have to limit your music to a certain sex, gender, "race" or whatever, you're simply having too less balls to really understand what art is about!
Ctulu "may" and should be listened to by everybody, no matter if the listener is male, female, black, white, green, red or whatever, as long as the listener is capable to value what we are doing and what art really is about!
Fine art doesn't limit itself to a small group of listeners, but to its very own value which should be outstanding and unique.
Down with conservatism and down with the scene police! This is our message and this is why any metalhead should buy our albums!
What have you released so far and how were your releases received by the public/media?
The discography can be seen above and so far all releases were well supported both by critics and maniacs while all of them yet suffered from a quite bad sound mix. This will be changed with "Sarkomand" in April 2011, with an adequate production that represents the band a hundred per cent.
Do you play live as well? How's your live activity so far?
Yeah, not only in 2011 Ctulu is very active. About thirty live ceremonies have been held since 2006 and the shores of Denmark, Greece, the Netherlands, Austria and of course Germany have been hit and were violently dragged deep under the sea.
In 2011, Ctulu will release its newest opus "Sarkomand" at the Ragnarök Festival in Lichtenfels, Bavaria and a lot of other festivals and shows in Germany and abroad are confirmed already or to be confirmed soon.
What should labels/zines/promoters know about your band? Why should they be interested in it?
Ctulu is constantly gathering maniacs all around the world and beyond the "limits" of genres, so the population of its vaults deep under the sea is unrestingly rising. Ctulu brings back the sound of pure, honest and intense rage to the world of metal.
What plans do you have for the near future as a band?
At the moment, a lot of things are happening. We will, as I said, release our next full-length album at the Ragnarök Festival 2011 where we'll share the stage with Enslaved (N), Kampfar (N), Twilight of the Gods (N/IRL/S) and many more. Furthermore, new merch will be produced and the stage appearance is still worked on. Besides, a newsletter will be send around regularly. Whoever is interested may send a mail to arne@ctulu.de. Ctulu is awake now and as incarnate as never before!
Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?
Listening to Ctulu's works is very easy, you'll find us in most of the important mailorders (e.g. Nuclear Blast), on YouTube and so on. But still the best way to get dragged into Ctulu's sound worlds is participating at one of our live ceremonies.
