Review:
The thirty-fuckin'-second full-length album from the Catania based one-man-band Vardan offers only 3 tracks but with a total duration of over half an hour of playing time (not the first time we're treated with such numbers, see From the Pale Moonlight from 2015 for example). Vardan labels his music as Atmospheric Black Metal, and atmospheric it is, indeed, but from my point of view this fall directly into the DSBM category, nothing clear than that. Slow to mid-tempo rhythms are the backbone to a melodic, deeply cathartic, mesmerizing, disturbing music that's impossible not to sadden the listener. At first audition it sounds quite simplistic and overly-repetitive, but as the album develops you understand that's the point actually, exactly like Burzum did earlier on, Vardan engulfs with melancholy and a weird state of comfort. Thinking about it, it feels like a confession where the listener is the spectator to Vardan's exorcism of all demons and misfortune, the guy cries his heart out to the listener and that's probably what made this project such a reputable name within the underground, apparently it sold more than 33000 copies of his albums Worldwide, which is at least respectable even fro the ones that don't digest such sonorities. Slow, depressive, tormenting, the new Vardan album is a must for DSBM followers, really, hide your razors and order this album at once!
